The Dougherty Valley Chemistry Club will be offering two extracurricular courses for students interested in chemistry to extend their knowledge base outside of what is typically taught in the high school classroom setting.
Theoretical Topics Covered:
Lecture 0: Introduction/Orientation
Lecture 1: Kinetics
Lecture 2: General Equilibrium
Lecture 3: Stoichiometry/Gas Laws
Lecture 4: General Thermodynamics
Lecture 5: Atomic Structure and Periodic Trends
Lecture 6: Photoelectron Spectroscopy (AP CHEMISTRY ONLY), Absorbance/Transmittance
Lecture 7: AXE Formulas and Covalent Structures
Lecture 8: Nuclear Chemistry
Lecture 9: Titrations/Acid-Base Chemistry
Lecture 10: Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Nomenclature and Functional Groups1
Practical Topics Covered:
Lab 1
Lab 2
Lab 3
Lab 4
Lab 5
Any general chemistry textbook is recommended for Chemical Foundations. Zumdahl Seventh Edition (breadth) and Atkins Tenth Edition (depth) are recommended. Carey Second Edition and Klein Any Edition recommended for organic topics. chemwiki.ucdavis.edu, wikipedia.com, and chemistryrocks.net are excellent online resources.
Homework and practice problems will be periodically provided to the Advanced Chemistry/USNCO students. Solutions to problems will be posted online. Come to meetings with questions if you have them!
